NATALIE DON-INNES MSP ENCOURAGES LOCAL PEOPLE TO RESPOND TO RENT CONTROL CONSULTATION

SNP MSP for Renfrewshire North and West, Natalie Don-Innes, is urging constituents to take part in a public consultation on rent controls and proposed exemptions set out in the Housing (Scotland) Bill.

The Scottish Government has published a consultation seeking views from tenants, landlords, and others in the rented sector on circumstances where exemptions from rent caps could apply. These include exemptions for mid-market rent and Build to Rent properties, and situations where rent increases above the cap might be allowed – such as following property improvements or when rent has historically been set below market levels.

The consultation also explores how the Government might use regulation-making powers to clarify how joint tenancies in the private sector can be ended.

Commenting, Natalie Don-Innes MSP said:

“The rent control proposals we have published as part of the Housing Bill are just some of the measures the SNP Scottish Government is taking to improve lives and work towards achieving our goal of ending child poverty in Scotland.

“These proposals will provide greater certainty for tenants across Renfrewshire North and West – helping keep people in their homes and making sure rents stay affordable during a cost-of-living crisis.

“Rental properties are a vital part of tackling Scotland’s housing emergency. We want landlords to feel confident investing and continuing to offer high-quality, affordable homes.

“This consultation is a key step in making sure the final legislation works for both tenants and landlords. I would strongly encourage everyone across the constituency to share their views before the consultation closes on 18 July 2025.”
