HEALTH SUPPORT FOR INJURED VETERANS

New network offers specialist clinical reviews for service-related injuries

Veterans in Scotland will now have access to independent clinical reviews for long-term military-related injuries or conditions through a new dedicated service.

The Veterans in Service Injury Network (VISIN), supported by £50,000 in annual Scottish Government funding, will be hosted by NHS Highland and available to veterans across Scotland.

Veterans can be referred to the network via their usual health professional if their injury or condition continues to cause concern despite previous interventions. A dedicated Veteran Coordinator will then assemble a multi-disciplinary team, including Veterans and Reservists with direct experience of service-related injuries, to review the case.

Where appropriate, the team will recommend further treatment options and provide guidance on longer-term support to address ongoing health needs.

Commenting on the launch, SNP MSP for Renfrewshire North and West, Natalie Don-Innes, said:

“The Scottish Government is committed to ensuring that all armed forces personnel and veterans living in Scotland can access safe, effective, and person-centred healthcare.

“We know some Veterans face complex health challenges due to long-term service-related injuries or conditions. The Veterans in Service Injury Network (VISIN) provides a clear pathway for them to access specialist support through their usual health professional.

“It is vital that our Veterans receive the care and support they deserve in recognition of their service. I am confident that VISIN will make a real difference to the treatment and wellbeing of Veterans across Scotland.”

NHS Highland Armed Forces Champion Jo McBain said:

“NHS Highland is proud to host the Veterans in Service Injury Network, providing vital support for veterans living with long-term physical health consequences of their service.

“The response from both clinical and military communities has been outstanding, with their enthusiasm and engagement proving invaluable throughout the pathway's development and implementation.

“Our experienced, multidisciplinary team draws expertise from across the country, reflecting the diverse healthcare specialisms veterans require. Furthermore, we're well-supported by military partners and third sector colleagues in delivering this essential pathway of care.”
